There is no point in trying for peace with someone that holds that the only "peace" is unconditional surrender. Like Ukraine has sad many times, a peace without security guarantees is not a peace.

One must understand that the Russian idea of "peace" is a Ukrainian surrender in which Ukraine is left with no security guarantees whatsoever, has to formerly cede five of its oblasts to Russia (including territory it currently holds) and let Moscow dictate its foreign policy as well as restrict the size of its army. Even if Levada was a truly independent organization, their methodology is taking personal interviews in respondent's house, which favors a certain demographic (pensioners and housewives, who are more likely to watch TV and repeat whatever bullshit they hear there), who are also not afraid to let some random people in and let their words be recorded. This conflict isn't over yet, but I have always said for a long time, the goal isn't total military victory over every last russian, the goal is to psychically break the war. Break the coercion they have to wage the war. This latest move may be that meniscus break that begins it. The start of the collapse of their command. 

It's unclear how the chain of command breaks down and what their military does, but it's clear that they are not going to get more volunteers, they're going to find it difficult to get more soldiers and more resources for the war. 

I predict that the war has a year at most left. The russia heads won't have the support to continue it. The military will have collapsed and Ukraine forces will be in moscow within a year. The main things we need to do when that happens is to secure the nukes. Move them out of russia, maybe some in ukraine the rest in NATO countries, moved to france, germany, any one of these countries. We can't let them stay there in stateless russia. 

They could be taken by people that should not have them. Russia's nukes could end up in Iran or some other country, could be taken by ISIS, could be taken by some other gang,

so our number one priority if the russian state collapses if their military surrenders is to take the nuclear arms, and then force them to demilitarize, shrink their army, just enough to maintain internal security. 

Try to have some sort of convention where they have to create a constitutional system, move towards having rights and chosen leaders.

I may be wrong, but I think with every passing week and month, Russia is in a weaker position. Economically, militarily, etc. 
Europe is now growing its defences, which will help Ukraine, whom are also making more of their own armaments and have restrictions lifted from using various weapon systems. 

Russia rejecting peace deals might be looked back in history books as another strategic blunder from their end. Because if the trend continues, it will be Russia who's seeking peace when their own sovereignty comes under threat. There is still a way to go to get there, but I notice patterns and weighs shifting.

As a Russian, my perspective from Moscow:

There is no massive demand for more war. Most of the people just try to live their lives and do not want to be involved in any war-related matters. So all the polls regarding war is mostly people trying to guess the Party line and give the answer that is acceptable. Since there are now active negotiations happening, the direct support for peace talks risen. 

Many have been hoping for a peace since the beginning, so every time there are news about the peace talks, they gain a considerably interest.

So I've delved a bit into the source called Levada.ru, an analytical think tank of Russia. The results are these: 


1. 65% are supportive of Russian's SMO in Ukraine 
2. 40% are not supportive of Russian's SMO in Ukraine (mind you, these are two different questions that might have a slightly different meaning but had since lost the notion due to my poor translation)
3. 72% are in the opinion that military action in Ukraine must continue
4. 54% are in the opinion that peace talks must be started soon &lt;--This is what the article cherry-picked


Imho, the support for military campaign in Ukraine is still quite high in Russia. The desire for peace talk does not mean less support for the war. The war vigour of the Russians are still quite high, though peace is more desirable now than previously.

For most of the war Putin &amp; Kremlin relied on:

* total control of the media so that they could quash any negative war information and dissenting opinions
* using 99% composition of soldiers drawn from rural oblasts particularly from the south and east, with virtually no representation from the white western core in the Moscow to St Petes stretch of the country other than some of the officer core.

But time and events have done him in.  The 3 day police action is now over 3 yrs old.  The supply of  ethnic minorities for meat at the front lines is diminished, Ukraine invaded Russian territory: Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts, and most recently Ukraine has successfully retaliated directly deep into many locations in Russia, although using restraint and only targeting military infrastructure.

The duration of the war, degradation of Russian military assets, and sanctions have combined into a very deleterious financial impact for both the Russian government and for the finances of individual Russians:  inflation is high, there is high food insecurity and shortages, and loans and mortgages are extremely expensive (mortgage rates &gt;28%).  The Russian treasury is taking a serious beating.   And the country is crashing demographically.

The consequences of the war no longer are hidden from that white power base Putin tried so hard to insulate.  So the complaints from the complacent have commenced.

People should stop pretending that peace talks are going to work. They're just a ploy by Trump to score an easy win for his polling. Putin will never accept any outcome where nato forces are allowed into Ukraine, and the Ukrainian constitution prevents formal surrendering of its territory.
